Kaduna State University, has once again led the university to another giant leap.

Prof Williams Barnabas Qurix the Vice Chancellor of the Kaduna State University, has once again led the university to another giant leap.

The university has attained  a record breaking  accreditation for the Faculty  of Medicine  from  the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the body with the sole authority  recognized by law to grant such.
This is record breaking because no Nigerian University has ever attained this feat within 6years of commencement of a medical faculty.

In a letter  dated 11th April 2016 written by the Registrar of the  Council, Dr A A Ibrahim, mni, Dsc conveying the accreditation  titled, PRE-CLININICAL  ACCREDITATION OF THE MBBS PROGRAME OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE KADUNA STATE UNIVERSITY, KADUNA .
The letter stated: “Further to the visitation made in December  2015 and the subsequent Verification of the deficiencies (pointed out  of the main visitation) carried on Tuesday 5th April, 2016 by the teams from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, the report was considered by the Council on the 6th April, 2016. Council, after deliberations decided that the Faculty of Medicine, Kaduna State University had satisfied the minimum requirements for Pre-clinical accreditation and directed that the accreditation be so granted to the faculty with effect from 6th April, 2016 for a maximum intake of (50) per class per academic session.
By this accreditation, the Faculty now has the recognition for the training of medical students in Human Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry and Human physiology and to take them up to the first professional examination of the MBBS program. As advised earlier, the Faculty should transform into a college to enable wide range of other Medical and allied health courses be offered.”

It is noteworthy that the faculty of Medicine has been lagging behind as a result of the issue of non accreditation. That has made some of its student who could not proceed on pre-clinicals to be sent to Uganda for further studies.
As it is now, KASU has been advised not to admit students into the faculty of Medicine for 2 years, 2016 and 2017 academic Sessions so as to clear the backlog.
A lecturer with the University has said that the accreditation was achieved because of the doggedness of the Vice Chancellor, Prof Qurix.
He said Qurix also got support from the Chairman of the Universities Governing Council, Prof Shehu Usman Abdulahi  and his council members.
“Don’t forget the support from the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasiru El-Rufai,” the lecturer said.
The university Don maintained that with the accreditation of the Medical school, all the courses in the University now have full accreditation except the department of Mathematics and History .

The university don  said he has Known Prof Qurix and his quest for Excellence  since their days as undergraduates in ABU Zaria adding that Quirix was an excellent student of architecture.
“He is the first Professor of Architecture in Kaduna State and the third Professor in architecture of Northern extraction,” the Lecturer said.

With this, many people are not surprise that Quirix was able to move KASU to such a great heights in little time, from a university of 4 Faculties when he came in to a university OF  7 faculties at present.
Quirix also ensure that the Kafanchan Campus of the university get running as it was in the original plan.
A Postgraduate school, a Consultancy  unit  and an Entrepreneurship Centre, in fact the  entrepreneurship centre houses the Network for African Student Entrepreneurs (NASE). And all were handi-work of Quirix.

In his magnanimity, the VC has also been able to attract heavy funding from Local and international  institutions like TETFUND and CBN  etc and as result of that, the university grew in structure and quality and is currently listed among the first 200 university in Africa.
Recently, the President and Commander-in- Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari, was a  guest of the university   during its 2nd  Convocation, where he was conferred  with a Honorary Doctorate Degree of letters.

Alh Aliko Dangote,  Africa’s richest man was also  awarded a Honorary Doctorate Degree at the same occasion. This is not accidental but a resultant effect of share hard work, commitment and dedication to duty which are a major characteristics of Prof Qurix. This are signs of better things to come.
