Does An Acting President Have A “WILL” of His Own?

Economy, Human Rights, Politics, Security
By Benjamin Bala Thoughts for this article arose from the reaction of Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President, to the “Return or Resign” protest group of 7th August, 2017. He asserted rightly that “Mr. President has complied 100% with the requirements of the constitution of this Country” because he, “has handed over power to the Vice President”. Garba Shehu stated that the Acting (Ag) President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo “was carrying out his responsibilities to the delight of the president”. He therefore insisted; “there was no power vacuum in governance even with Buhari’s absence” (tribuneonlineng.com, accessed on 08.08.2017). I have also listened curiously to some learned lawyers and political analysts with admiration arguing in favour of same position. No doubt, the Preside

SOUTHERN KADUNA PEOPLES’ UNION (SOKAPU) OUR POSITION ON THE PROPOSED REVIEW OF EXISTING CHIEFTAINCY SYSTEM IN KADUNA STATE Our attention was drawn on 28/7/2017 to two documents circulating in the social media on review of existing chieftaincy system in Kaduna State. The first is titled “Appointment of Committee to Review the Existing Chieftaincy System in the State” and the second emanated from a body called the “Committee to Review the Existing Chieftaincy System in the State Sub-Committee on the Nomenclature”. The mandate or Terms of (TOR) Reference of the main Committee are: “(i). To examine the existing nomenclature of the graded chiefs which emphasizes ethnic identity and propose new ones based on town/location of the Chiefdom taking due cognizance of the historical antece

Southern Kaduna Peoples’ Union Press Statement 18/7/2017 Our attention has been drawn to certain press reports by a Kaduna-based radio station that SOKAPU has signed a peace pact with certain groups at a meeting convened by Global Peace Foundation Nigeria in Kafanchan on 13th July, 2017. The report is completely untrue. SOKAPU did not sign any form of agreement with any group, body or individuals. No agreement of any nature was signed at the meeting. Groups were invited to give their brief perspectives about the attacks in Southern Kaduna as well as the way forward. SOKAPU assured the gathering that Southern Kaduna people are inherently a peaceful, accommodating and hospitable people. Also, that SOKAPU as a Union does not condone killings of anyone-Christian or Muslim; Bajju

It's no longer news that Luka Biniyat ha been incarcerated and now in jail despite his poor health. What was supposed to be a normal court procedure became a charade of the highest order as the judge after the hearing ordered that Luka be remanded in prison until the 20th of July. The judge, by keeping Luka in the prison walls definitely is  acting a script carefully put together by Elrufai who is desperate to prove a point that he is Lord of the law and has power to twist our Nigerian constitution to suit his purposes. Kaduna State, under the leadership of El Rufai has degenerated to an all time low. At the slightest provocation, he deploys executive powers given to him through a mandate. He has mischievously transformed this power into an instrument of coercion and oppression to humil

Just like former Governor Ramallan Yero did prior to the 2015 gubernatorial elections when he hired a consultant to tell him how to win the gubernatorial elections, Governor, El-Rufai is also toying the same path. He, El-Rufai actually wanted to contest for the Presidency after his first term in kaduna. His plan was to support the present Commissioner  for Budget and Planning as Governor and somebody ( He hasn't really made up his mind on this because of his belief that he or the person he backs can win election in kaduna without the votes of southern Kaduna people )from SK as deputy in 2019. That's Partly the reason why he was treating SK and by extension people in kaduna the way he is currently doing. His intention was to do his term and then move to Abuja in 2019. He was counting on

By Benjamin Bala I choose this caption "After the Reggae Play the Blues" from a song by Nigerian artists to speak to my fellow young people in our language. For the purpose of this article, let us take the word "reggae" as a metaphor for "war" (apologies to lovers of reggae music) and "blues" for "peace". We have seen agitations for cessation characterized by printable and unprintable name calling. We have also seen recent ultimata in the country with 1st October, 2017 as a deadline; pending declaration of an independent republic on same date. The languages and tones of communication are also characterized by so much venom, threatening the peace and unity of this country. The reggae (war) drums are beating so loud and the only thing remaining is the corresponding reggae dance steps w...

That Kaduna State Residency Card

When I first heard about the Kaduna State Residency Card, I was surprised and bewildered. The strangeness and uncertain appropriateness of the scheme reek of a discordant possibility of just anything.   More so that public awareness on it was so dismal that even some within the Kaduna State Government couldn’t give a satisfactory explanation when asked. Trying to research it so as to be on the right pedestal toward shaping an opinion about it became a task. Later, I scribbled what my fears about the Residency Card were but before posting it, Daily Trust (21 June, 2017) took a stand on the same scheme and reinforced my opinion that this is one policy that will blow us no good in Kaduna state. This is the opening paragraph from the Daily Trust Editorial: “At this point in time when
